Brazil’s massive Pantanal wetlands haven’t technically entered annual fire season. However, the number of blazes has already broken records & alarmed climate scientists. The world’s largest tropical wetlands are prone to fires from July to September. National Space Research Institute’s satellites spotted over 2,500 fires in June alone. Over 2500 fires – By far the most ever recorded for the month in data going back to 1998. It’s over 6x the amount in the same month of 2020, known as ‘the year of flames’. Brazil’s federal government has deployed 285 agents from various agencies. 82 National Guard members have been deployed to support local fire brigades. Expectations for extreme drought in August and September are causing further alarm. In rainy season, rivers flood the land & make most of it accessible only by boat/plane. This year, the Paraguay River basin saw a significant deficit of rainfall. #ClimateEmergency: 2024 could be one of the driest years on record in Brazil. Most of the ongoing fires in Pantanal wetlands are very likely to be man-made. Environment Minister Marina Silva: 85% of the fires originated in private properties.
