In an exclusive interview with India Today, Humayun Kabir, the Joint Secretary General (International Affairs) of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), discussed the future of India-Bangladesh relations following the party’s landmark election victory. Kabir, who is expected to become the next foreign minister, stated, ‘Any kind of extremism will always be addressed,’ emphasizing that both nations must cooperate on security and information exchange. He addressed concerns regarding the use of Bangladeshi soil for anti-India activities, asserting that it is in neither country’s interest to destabilise the other’s territory. Kabir also highlighted the BNP’s commitment to protecting minority rights and maintaining communal harmony, which he claimed is better in Bangladesh than elsewhere in South Asia. The interview follows reports that the BNP will invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tarique Rahman’s swearing-in ceremony, signaling a priority to reset ties with neighbours. Meanwhile, ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has dismissed the election as a ‘one-sided’ sham.
