The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured a decisive victory in the 300-seat parliament, crossing the majority mark of 151 seats. Reports indicate that the BNP is headed for a two-thirds majority, marking a historic comeback after years of political exile. Party chairman Tarique Rahman, who recently returned to Bangladesh after 17 years in London, has reportedly won both his contested seats in Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6. The Jamaat-e-Islami, which provided a spirited challenge, is currently trailing with 34 seats and is expected to form a formidable opposition. While official results from the Election Commission are still pending, the BNP camp has already begun celebrations. This election follows a long period of political dominance by the Awami League, which the BNP had previously boycotted. The transition marks a significant shift in the country’s leadership as Tarique Rahman prepares to be sworn in as the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
