The flight data recorder from the Air India Dreamliner that crashed in Ahmedabad on 12 June has been found damaged, officials confirmed. The recorder – commonly referred to as the ‘black box’ – may need to be sent to the United States for further data recovery.
The black box, which includes both the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), was retrieved approximately 28 hours after the crash. Though often called black, the devices are painted bright orange to aid recovery amid wreckage.
Sources said, “The final decision on whether the black box will be sent to the U.S. will be made by the Indian government.” If approved, it is expected to be taken to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) laboratory in Washington, with Indian aviation officials accompanying it to oversee the process.
