The Bharatiya Janata Party has accused the former UPA government of having a ‘terror tango’. The charge stems from a sensational claim by JKLF terrorist Yasin Malik, who is serving a life sentence in a terror funding case. In an affidavit filed in the Delhi High Court on August 25, Malik stated he met Lashkar-e-Taiba founder and 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed in Pakistan in 2006. According to Malik, the meeting was arranged at the request of Indian intelligence officials as part of a back-channel peace process. Following this, Malik claims, "Prime Minister Manmohan Singh personally thanked and expressed gratitude to him." The BJP is using this claim to contrast the UPA’s alleged soft approach to terror with its own post-2014 ‘iron fist policy’, stating that terror and talks cannot go hand-in-hand. The Congress party has reportedly remained silent on the allegations.
