The President questioned whether the aim was to prevent Santhal people from attending in large numbers, noting that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and state ministers were absent. Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised the West Bengal government on social media, calling the situation ‘shameful and unprecedented’ and stating that ‘the TMC government of West Bengal has truly crossed all limits.’ Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit back, accusing the President of being ‘sent by the BJP to sell their agenda’ and questioning why the President remained silent on tribal issues in Manipur, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. BJP MP Soumitra Khan demanded the imposition of Article 356 in West Bengal.
