J.P. Nadda, President of the Indian Health Ministry, detailed India’s healthcare transformation at a recent health summit. He outlined a 2017 policy shift from a curative-only approach to a holistic model encompassing prevention, promotion, detection, and geriatric care. A key initiative involves digital tracking of every pregnancy from conception, managed through 1,79,000 Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs. Significant achievements include an increase in institutional deliveries to nearly 90% and sharp declines in maternal and infant mortality rates. Nadda highlighted the Ayushman Bharat scheme, now covering 62 crore people, including all individuals over 70, facilitating over 10 crore hospital admissions since 2017. The Tele-MANAS initiative provides accessible mental healthcare. Progress in disease control includes WHO certification for Trachoma elimination and a decline in Tuberculosis cases, with free treatment for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. Medical colleges have expanded from 387 in 2014 to 808, and affordable medicines via AMRIT and Jan Aushadhi have reduced out-of-pocket expenditure from 62.6% to 39.4%.
