The Bharatiya Janata Party has released its first list of 144 candidates for the West Bengal assembly elections, a day after the Election Commission announced the poll dates. Among the key announcements, Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of opposition and former Trinamool Congress leader, will contest from Nandigram, where he had defeated Mamata Banerjee in 2021. He will also contest from Bhavanipur, Mamata Banerjee’s current constituency. Other prominent candidates include Agnimitra Paul from Asansol Dakshin, Dilip Ghosh from Kharagpur Sadar, and Ashim Biswas from Ranaghat Uttar Purva. West Bengal will vote in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The election is expected to be a direct contest between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress, with Mamata Banerjee defending her position as Chief Minister.
