A major political storm is brewing in Bihar as opposition parties call for a ‘Chakka Jam’ (road blockade) to protest against the Election Commission’s special intensive revision of voter lists. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to lead a protest march in Patna along with RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav. The opposition, including the Mahagathbandhan, has announced a state-wide bandh. Roads have been blocked in several areas, including Hajipur, where tyres were burnt. The protest march will cover a 2 km stretch from the Income Tax roundabout to the Election Commission office in Patna. BJP has accused the opposition of trying to shield infiltrators and secure votes from a particular community. The Election Commission maintains that the voter list cleanup exercise will be completed within a fortnight.
