Iran is mourning the loss of Ali Larijani, one of its most powerful figures, killed in Israeli airstrikes along with his son Morteja Larijani, his deputy Ali Reza Bayat, and several guards inside his daughter’s home northeast of Tehran. Larijani was a central pillar of Iran’s establishment for decades, working closely with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and playing a key role in national security and foreign policy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the operation, stating, ‘This morning we eliminated Ali Larijani. Ali Larijani is the boss of the Revolutionary Guards which is a gang of gangsters that in practice runs Iran.’ Tel Aviv also claims to have assassinated Iran’s Intelligence Minister Ismail Khatib. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Arrachi stressed that Iran’s system is built on strong institutions, not individuals. The elimination comes on day 19 of the conflict, with questions mounting about who is running Iran and whether the regime remains stable.
