A special NIA court in Delhi has sentenced Kashmiri separatist Asiya Andrabi to life imprisonment in a case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Two of her associates, Sofi Fehmeeda and Nahida Nasreen, have been awarded 30 years imprisonment each. The court pronounced the verdict in closed proceedings. In January, the NIA special court had convicted the three for waging war against India, separatist activities, hate speech, and spreading disaffection against the Indian state under various provisions of UAPA and IPC. Andrabi had been arrested in 2018 and had been charged by the National Investigation Agency for waging war against India through hate speech, criminal conspiracy, and unlawful activities. She had founded a separatist group in 1987 that was subsequently banned. The life sentence effectively means imprisonment till death. The NIA had called for the most stringent punishment during sentencing arguments.
