The Supreme Court is set to hear a petition filed by Bhupesh Baghel and his son, Chaitanya Baghel, challenging the powers of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate. The plea questions the legitimacy of the investigation being conducted by the central agencies in the liquor case, following Chaitanya Baghel’s recent arrest. The petition alleges that the probe is a form of political vendetta and claims the agencies have overstepped their mandate. The plea states, “the ED is being used as a tool to target opposition leaders.” It also contends that the central agencies did not follow the prescribed processes for investigation before making arrests. The case is scheduled to be heard on Monday before a bench headed by Justice Surya Kant, and it may be considered alongside other petitions challenging the ED’s powers of search, seizure, and arrest.
