Opposition MPs on Thursday accused the Centre of using Hindi for new bills being tabled in the Rajya Sabha, while the government hit back, saying the opposition was clinging on to a colonial mindset.
During the Winter Session of Parliament, Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghosh questioned the Hindi naming of the bill, Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, 2024, which seeks to replace the 90-year-old Aircraft Act to boost the ease of doing business and attract investments in the aviation sector.
In response to the Opposition’s objections, Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu defended the decision to title the bill in Hindi. He explained that the change from English to Hindi was made to "showcase India’s heritage and culture".
Naidu clarified that the shift in language did not violate any constitutional provisions. He said the decision was in line with respecting India’s linguistic diversity and heritage, countering claims of any legal or constitutional breach.
