The death of 22-year-old student Dhanushree in a road accident in Bengaluru has reignited the debate over the city’s dangerous potholes. Police have registered a hit-and-run case, but the JDS party and eyewitnesses allege the student lost her balance while trying to avoid a pothole before being hit by a lorry. The incident has led to public outcry and citizen protests, including a ‘black mass protest’ against civic authorities’ inaction. In a previous discussion with India Today, Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivkumar acknowledged the scale of the problem, stating, ‘Still we have more than 5,000 plus potholes.’ He discussed plans for long-term solutions like concrete white-topping for roads and an app for citizens to report potholes. However, activists question the delay in taking precautionary measures before such tragedies occur.
