Bengaluru Metro Fare Hike Put On Hold Following Public Backlash And Political Row | India Today

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has placed its proposed annual fare revision on hold following significant public outcry and political opposition. The hike, originally announced on 5th February, was scheduled to take effect today, 9th February 2026. Amidst this development, Bengaluru police served a notice to a BJP Member of Parliament, denying permission for a planned ’empty trunk stir’ protest outside a metro station. Authorities cited High Court orders mandating that all agitations must be confined to Freedom Park to avoid public inconvenience. While the BMRCL maintains the pause is due to a pending board review, the BJP has claimed the rollback as a victory for the citizens. The programme highlights the ongoing uncertainty for commuters and the intense political sparring between the BJP and the Congress government over the proposed five percent fare increase.
