In this Special Report, popular Bengali singer Lagnajita Chakraborty narrates her harrowing experience in East Midnapore’s Bhagavanpur where she was threatened on stage. While performing the devotional song ‘Jagoma’ from the movie Devi Chowdhurani, the accused, identified as Mehboob Malik, rushed the stage and attempted to assault her. Lagnajita reveals that Malik shouted, ‘Anek jagoma hoye chhe, ebar ek to secular gaa’ (Enough of Jagoma, now sing something secular). The singer filed a complaint at the Bhagavanpur police station, leading to Malik’s arrest. The Officer-in-Charge has been suspended for negligence. Despite the ordeal, Lagnajita affirms her faith in the administration and vows to perform ‘Jagoma’ again at her next show in Arambagh. Senior Investigative Journalist Tapas Sengupta reports on the incident which has sparked a political row, with the BJP questioning the safety of artists in West Bengal.
