Popular Bengali singer Lagnajita Chakraborty has alleged that she was threatened and nearly assaulted by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mehboob Malik during a performance in East Midnapur’s Bhagwanpur. Speaking exclusively to India Today, Chakraborty stated that Malik rushed the stage and demanded she stop singing the devotional song ‘Jago Ma’ from the movie ‘Devi Chowdhurani’, shouting, ‘Anek jagoma hoye chhe, ebar ek tu secular ga’ (Enough of Jago Ma, now sing something secular). India Today’s Senior Investigative Journalist Tapas Sengupta reports that Malik, who was a co-organizer of the event at South Point Public School, has been arrested following a police complaint. The incident has triggered a political controversy, with the BJP condemning the alleged attack on artistic freedom and women’s safety in West Bengal.
