MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh were targeted in Nagrakata, with another MLA, Manoj Kumar Orao, attacked in Alipur Dwar. The incidents prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to call the law and order situation "pathetic". Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee countered, accusing the Prime Minister of "politicising a natural disaster…without a shred of verified evidence". The BJP alleges the ruling TMC orchestrated the violence, a charge the TMC denies. Governor Ananda Bose criticised the state police, stating they were conniving and not doing their duty.
