Minutes before election dates are announced, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rolled out multiple announcements including a 500 rupee hike in allowance for Purohits and Muezzins across the state, affecting several lakh beneficiaries. She also announced the state government will start clearing dues of dearness allowance to state government employees, following a Supreme Court directive. The Chief Minister has additionally revised daily allowances for teachers, non-teaching staff of educational institutions, employees, pensioners, panchayats, municipal bodies, and other local bodies. The allowance, last revised in 2009, will be applicable from March 2026 onwards. These announcements come as West Bengal prepares for elections, which are expected to be held in two or three phases, significantly fewer than the eight phases in 2021.
