At the India Today Conclave, Rajiv Gupta, Managing Director and Senior Partner at Boston Consulting Group, presented key findings from a study on AI’s impact on India’s technology sector. This report, conducted in partnership with NITI Aayog, projects that approximately 1.5 million of the 8 million existing tech jobs are susceptible to displacement due to AI-driven efficiencies in areas such as software development and call centers. However, the study also forecasts the potential creation of up to 4 million new, hyper-specialized roles, which could expand the sector to 10 million jobs. Gupta emphasized the critical need for specialization, stating, "I am the last generation of having made a career out of being a generalist." He highlighted emerging roles like ‘prompt engineer’ and ‘quantum machine learning engineer’. Gupta advocated for rapid reskilling and systemic educational reforms, including co-op programs and updated AI curricula, to prepare the workforce for this transformation. Global data from the World Economic Forum projects a net creation of 78 million jobs worldwide by 2030.
