The city of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh remains tense a week after riots on September 26th. Ahead of Friday prayers, security is heightened with heavy police deployment, drone surveillance, and an internet shutdown until October 4th to curb misinformation. An FIR suggests the earlier violence was "scripted mayhem" intended to target police. In a key development, police recovered a looted anti-riot gun after a cross-firing in which two suspects, identified as Idris and Iqbal, were injured and arrested. Police stated the two men from Shahjahanpur were called to the city on the day of the riots. Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Chandrashekhar Azad was prevented from visiting victims and has accused the government of “strifing democracy and suppressing the victims’ voices.” The city’s security includes the Virangana Women’s Commando Unit patrolling sensitive areas.
