Bangladesh is heading into its most competitive national election since 2009, with voters casting ballots on February 12 following months of political upheaval. Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from power after a 2024 uprising, and her Awami League party has been barred from contesting the vote. The election is widely seen as the country’s first genuinely competitive poll in more than a decade.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is expected by analysts to perform strongly, while a coalition led by Jamaat-e-Islami is mounting a significant challenge. BNP leader Tarique Rahman told Reuters his party was confident of securing enough seats to form a government.
Voters have cited corruption, rising living costs and employment as key election issues. Analysts say a decisive outcome could prove critical for restoring stability after months of unrest disrupted major sectors, including the garments industry. The result is also expected to influence Bangladesh’s relations with regional powers such as China and India, with Generation Z voters, who make up roughly a quarter of the electorate, seen as a potentially decisive bloc.
