Bangladesh Elections LIVE: Bangladesh Votes in First Gen Z-Driven Election After Hasina’s Ouster

Bangladesh is heading into its most competitive national election since 2009, with voters set to cast ballots on February 12 following months of political upheaval. Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from power after a 2024 uprising, and her Awami League party has been banned from contesting the vote. The election is widely seen as the country’s first genuinely competitive poll in over a decade.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is expected by analysts to perform strongly, though it faces a close challenge from a coalition led by Jamaat-e-Islami. A new party driven by Generation Z activists has aligned with Jamaat after failing to convert its role in anti-Hasina protests into an independent electoral base. BNP leader Tarique Rahman told Reuters his party was confident of winning enough seats to form a government.

Voters have highlighted corruption, rising living costs and employment as key concerns, with high turnout expected. Analysts say a decisive outcome is critical for restoring stability in the country of around 175 million people after months of unrest disrupted major industries, including the garments sector. The result is also expected to shape Bangladesh’s relations with regional powers, including China and India, as Generation Z voters, who make up roughly a quarter of the electorate, play a potentially decisive role.
