US Representative Suhas Subramanyam has raised serious concerns regarding the upcoming elections in Bangladesh, scheduled for February 12, 2026. Speaking on India Today, Subramanyam described the process as a ‘sham poll’ and highlighted a significant rise in anti-Hindu hate and violence. He stated, ‘it’s not truly free and fair if, uh, certain religious minorities are not able to participate fully or being intimidated in any sort of way.’ The Congressman criticised leading political parties for paying ‘lip service’ to religious minorities to improve their international image while failing to provide actual protection. The discussion also noted that the Awami League, a major political force, has been barred from participating, further undermining the democratic legitimacy of the exercise. Experts suggest that the safety of Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians remains a major question mark as radical elements gain influence. Subramanyam urged the United States to keep a close watch on the situation to ensure the protection of minorities in the neighbouring nation.
