New details have emerged in the death of a 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, Odisha, who died by self-immolation. The student had accused the head of the department, Sameer Sahu, of sexual harassment. India Today has accessed three letters she wrote to college authorities, which were allegedly ignored. A new video shows the victim confronting the principal, Dilip Ghosh, over the lack of action. Both the principal and the accused teacher have since been suspended and arrested. The incident has been termed an ‘institutional betrayal’ by former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and ‘organized murder’ by Rahul Gandhi. A family member stated the death was not a suicide and that murder charges should be applied. The Odisha government has announced a 20 lakh rupees ex gratia for the family amid widespread protests.
