A new bill introduced in the US Congress has sent the US-Indian student community into a tizzy. The threat of deportation is real, with students receiving regular and ominous reminders jeopardizing their stay in the United States.
The proposed bill aims to eliminate the Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme — a valuable post-study work authorisation that currently allows international students to stay and work in the US after graduation.
For thousands of students, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), OPT is a critical bridge between education and permanent job opportunities.
Under current laws, international students on F-1 visas, especially those pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering, and maths fields, are eligible to remain back in the country for three years for work experience.
For the majority, this period of time is essential to build up careers, consolidate student loans, and transition onto long-term work visas like the H-1B. If the bill is enacted into law, this pathway would vanish, and thousands would need to leave the country instantly after graduation.
