Baba Kalyani, MD of Bharat Forge, Recalls When India’s Defence Industry Saw a Turning Point
Speaking at the Forces First Conclave, Baba Kalyani, the Managing Director of Bharat Forge, recalled a personal and historic moment from 12 January 2016, when he was in the same room with the then Army Chief and Defence Minister, Manohar Parrikar. At that time, the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) had just been formed at the behest of the late Mr. Parrikar, who wanted the defence industry to unite under one platform instead of several forums.
He shared how their team had already built the first artillery gun in 2012, but could not get permission to test it until 2016. Seeking help from friends at the U.S. Army’s Rock Island Arsenal, they managed to test it within 45 days, a process that takes 45 months in India. After seeing the results, Mr. Parrikar ordered all private sector testing to be allowed in Army ranges, marking a major milestone.
