A political face-off is escalating in Assam between the state government and the Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Hind. The conflict centres on a solidarity visit by a seven-member Jamiat delegation, led by Mahmood Madani, to Goalpara, a site of recent eviction drives. These drives have reportedly affected Bengali Muslims. In response to the visit, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the police will maintain strict monitoring to prevent any law and order issues. The government’s vigilance is heightened due to the sensitivity of the area, especially with the Boro Territorial Administration (BTR) elections approaching, followed by the state assembly elections in 2026. The Chief Minister has stated that punitive action will be taken if the situation escalates.
