The Union Cabinet is expected to approve a landmark infrastructure project involving an 18,600-crore road-cum-rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra River in Assam. This strategic initiative will be India’s first twin-tube underwater tunnel designed to facilitate both vehicular and railway movement. The project aims to connect Gohpur on the north bank with Numaligarh on the south bank, significantly reducing travel time from approximately four hours to just 35 minutes. Beyond enhancing civilian mobility, the tunnel holds immense strategic significance due to Assam’s proximity to international borders and the ‘Chicken’s Neck’ corridor. The project is a key focus of the government’s efforts to improve connectivity in the Northeast, particularly as the state of Assam prepares for upcoming polls. The tunnel is expected to bolster defense and security considerations by allowing faster movement of troops and supplies during emergencies. This decision marks one of the final major approvals in the current Cabinet meeting at South Block.
