The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Sarma, will stop issuing new Aadhaar cards to individuals over the age of 18, starting from the first week of October this year. The state’s Chief Minister has stated that "the move is aimed at preventing illegal Bangladeshi migrants from acquiring Aadhaar cards in the state." This policy is presented as a preventive measure to stop the illegal procurement of legitimate documents by foreign nationals. The move comes amid ongoing concerns about infiltration from Bangladesh, a significant issue in the border state. It has also generated a political response, with opposition parties questioning the government’s decision.
