Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outlined the BJP strategy for the upcoming state assembly elections, revealing plans to allocate 30 tickets to Congress members who will subsequently support the NDA in Rajya Sabha polls. Sarma addressed the issue of illegal migration, estimating the post-1971 migrant population at 70 lakh based on historical government data. He stated that while mass expulsion is not feasible, his administration applies pressure to encourage voluntary departure, noting that 4,000 people were recently evicted under existing laws. The Chief Minister defended the timing of the SIT report on Gaurav Gogoi and highlighted his government’s record, including the recruitment of 1.65 lakh youth, the establishment of 26 medical colleges, and securing Rs 3 lakh crore in investment commitments. Sarma further discussed efforts to stop child marriage and reduce crime rates. Predicting the Congress party will contest only 24 seats, he dismissed anti-incumbency concerns while emphasizing his commitment to a high-intensity campaign despite anticipated electoral victory.
