Three women from Arunachal Pradesh residing in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar have alleged racial abuse and intimidation by their neighbours following a dispute over air conditioner installation. The incident, which occurred on February 20, reportedly began when dust from drilling fell into the neighbours’ balcony. One of the victims stated, ‘He was like, northeastern, (He said he would come and hit us, that he wouldn’t talk to us, and that as Northeasterners, we don’t deserve to live here and are illiterate). The women further alleged they were subjected to sexist slurs, including being called ‘sex workers’ and ‘massage parlour’ employees. Delhi Police has registered an FIR against the accused couple, identified as Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain, under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for promoting enmity and insulting a woman’s modesty. Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma has also called for an end to anti-Northeast bias.
