An Indian national from Arunachal Pradesh, Prema, was detained and harassed during an 18-hour ordeal at Shanghai airport while in transit to Japan. Chinese officials declared her Indian passport invalid, claiming Arunachal Pradesh is part of China. Prema stated that after she was singled out, an official ‘used translate and said Arunachal is part of China. Your passport is invalid basically’. The incident, which involved mocking and abuse, concluded only after the Indian embassy intervened to secure her rescue from the airport.
