The Arctic skies recently witnessed a rare and breathtaking phenomenon called nacreous clouds, or rainbow clouds. These vibrant clouds form in the stratosphere at extremely cold temperatures, around -85°C, and are illuminated by sunlight below the horizon. Their iridescent colors are caused by the diffraction of light through tiny ice crystals in the clouds. These clouds are visible during polar winters when the sun is low. While beautiful, they can also contribute to ozone depletion due to their unique chemical reactions.
