Ancient Supernova Traces Found in Pacific Ocean Depths | WION Podcast

Scientists have discovered traces of the rare radioactive isotope Beryllium-10 at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, offering a potential new global time marker. This isotope, formed by cosmic ray interactions, is believed to date back 10 million years, possibly due to an ancient near-Earth supernova. The study, published in Nature Communications, suggests that Beryllium-10 could revolutionize geological dating beyond the limits of radiocarbon methods. With a half-life of 1.4 million years, it allows researchers to date samples far older than 50,000 years, unlocking new insights into Earth’s cosmic history.
