A 7,200-year-old skeleton found in an Indonesian cave, known as "Bess," has revealed surprising ancestral connections. Genomic analysis shows that Bess was a distant relative of Aboriginal Australians and Papuans, but her genetic makeup is unlike any known human population. The discovery, published in Nature, marks the first time ancient human DNA has been reported from Wallacea, an area between Borneo and New Guinea. Bess belonged to the Toaleans, an early foraging culture, and was buried with tools and animal bones, shedding light on ancient human history.
