For decades, the Cambrian creature Anomalocaris canadensis was seen as an apex hunter that crushed trilobites on the seafloor. New research is now challenging that fearsome image using fossil evidence, biomechanics, and 3D computer modelling. Scientists found that its soft body and mouthparts were poorly suited for crushing hard shells. Instead, its flexible, spiny appendages may have been adapted for grasping softer prey. The findings are reshaping how scientists understand early ocean ecosystems during the Cambrian period.
