Home Minister Amit Shah said in the Lok Sabha that for 73 years, there was no clear rule on how Election Commissioners should be appointed — the Prime Minister used to appoint them directly.
From 1950 to 1989, the Election Commission had only one member.
From 1989 to 1991, it became a multi-member Commission.
A total of 29 Election Commissioners were appointed under this old system.
