He argues that colonial-era history, which frames Indian history as a Hindu-Muslim conflict rather than an Indian-foreigner one, must be corrected, and criticises the ‘slavery mentality’ reflected in cultural obsessions like fair skin. Tripathi states, ‘We are still running the way the British Raj presented our history to us. Do you notice that the British colonial rule is not called the Christian invasion, but the Turkic colonial rule is called the Islamic invasion’. He clarifies that while India should embrace good ideas from the West, such as AI, it must first be rooted in its own traditions, citing ancient Indian democratic structures like the Vaishali confederacy which existed before those in Greece. The debate also features historian William Dalrymple.
