Ali Sabri, former Foreign Office Minister of Sri Lanka, spoke about Sri Lanka’s decision to maintain neutrality by declining a US request to allow aircraft to land at Sri Lankan airports in early March. He stated, ‘I’m proud that the President had the courage and foresight to do what is the right thing to do.’ Sabri emphasised that Sri Lanka has maintained strategic autonomy and a ferociously independent foreign policy. He highlighted the challenges small nations face during conflicts, noting that Sri Lankans are currently experiencing LPG gas shortages and fuel rationing of 15 litres per week. Sabri called for regional collaboration among littoral states in the Indian Ocean, stressing that India must play a major role. He advocated for the Indian Ocean to remain a zone of peace, free from external conflicts. Sabri also supported opening Sri Lankan skies to more international carriers to boost tourism and make the country a regional aviation hub.
