Action choreographer Aejaz Gulab spoke to India Today’s Sana Farzeen about the lack of insurance, mediclaim and government aid for stuntmen in the film industry. He revealed how actor Akshay Kumar personally pays the insurance premium for stunt performers, while stars like Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan also continue to extend their support.
Gulab opened up about the recent death of popular stuntman Raju on the sets of Pa Ranjith and Arya’s upcoming Tamil film, highlighting how the increasing corporatisation of the industry has led to severe budget cuts, forcing stuntmen to work in unsafe and poor conditions. He also clarified that, contrary to reports, the action association does not charge any fees for issuing a card, and is instead actively in touch with the authorities to improve welfare measures and ensure better safety protocols for stunt professionals.
