Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s death in a plane crash at the Baramati Airport has led to focus on the challenges pilots may face while landing at the airstrip. The Baramati Airport is an uncontrolled airstrip which means it is a very basic airstrip with minimal navigational aids for pilots, and visual reference for pilots is critical. The ATC tower is managed by senior pilots from the adjacent flying school, and it has no modern aviation landing aids like an ILS. To add to the challenge, one end of the airstrip is a tabletop runway, leaving even less scope for any errors. NDTV reports from the two ends of the Baramati Airport runway to show the challenges that pilots may face while landing at the airstrip.
