The Pawar family is one of Maharashtra’s most influential political dynasties. At its centre is Sharad Pawar and a network of relatives in politics and public life. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Sharad Pawar’s estranged nephew and once seen as his successor, died in a plane crash on January 28, 2026.
Over decades, members of this family built a strong presence in regional and national politics, especially through the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
The family’s influence was based in Baramati, Pune district, where multiple generations contested elections, led cooperative movements, and held leadership roles.
