The Federation of Indian Airlines has strongly opposed the DGCA’s new mandate requiring airlines to allocate at least 60 percent of seats on domestic flights for free pre-selection. The Federation, representing airlines including IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet, has written to the Civil Aviation Ministry raising three primary concerns. First, they warn the rule will compel airlines to increase airfares, making it counterproductive for passengers. Second, they allege regulatory overreach, citing court orders that suggest DGCA cannot interfere with unbundled services and airfare regulation. Third, they claim they were not consulted before the directive was issued. The DGCA introduced the rule to enhance passenger access and reduce extra fees for preferred seating, which currently range from Rs 300 to Rs 1000. Airlines argue the mandate removes their unbundled revenue sources from seat allocation, meals, and other services, forcing them to compensate through higher base fares.
