AI is a Tool, Not a Friend: Dr. Vishal Sikka on Regulation and the Power of 'Boss Mode' |India Today

In an insightful session at the India Today Conclave, Dr. Vishal Sikka, founder of Vianai Systems and former Infosys CEO, discussed the transformative potential and inherent risks of Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Sikka emphasized that AI should be viewed as a powerful tool rather than a ‘friend,’ stating, ‘If you take boss mode as understanding the limitations of AI… it is an unbelievably powerful tool.’ He reflected on his early investment in OpenAI and his vision for AI-first enterprises. Addressing the technical challenges of generative AI, he noted that ‘hallucination is an inherent attribute of AI,’ which necessitates robust oversight. Dr. Sikka lauded the Indian government’s proactive approach to AI safety, ethics, and regulation, comparing the necessity of AI standards to the safety regulations that govern physical infrastructure. He concluded that while AI regresses to the mean if used blindly, organizations that successfully ‘tame the hallucination’ will find significant opportunities in the evolving digital landscape.
