Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed the inaugural AI Summit in the Global South, outlining India’s comprehensive strategy to democratize technology through a five-layer AI stack. He emphasized that the ‘ROI will come from the application layer’ to benefit the masses in sectors like healthcare and agriculture. Highlighting India’s commitment to digital sovereignty, Vaishnaw announced the launch of several sovereign multilingual models designed to compete with global frontier models at a lower cost. A key highlight was the expansion of India’s common compute platform, which currently provides 38,000 GPUs to startups and researchers, with an additional 20,000 GPUs to be added soon. The Minister also noted a significant policy shift aimed at making India a global hub for data residency and processing. Furthermore, he linked AI growth to clean energy, noting that over 50% of India’s power capacity now comes from renewable sources, supported by recent reforms in the nuclear energy sector to provide a stable base load for the digital ecosystem.
