Agniveer Is Part Of Army: Speaker Seeks Benefits For Murali Naik’s Family In Bombay High Court

In a significant legal development regarding the Agniveer scheme, a speaker representing the family of Murali Naik has approached the Bombay High Court. Murali Naik, an Agniveer who lost his life in the Poonch sector in 2024, is at the centre of a petition seeking parity in benefits with regular soldiers. The speaker clarified that while they are not challenging the constitutionality of the Agniveer scheme itself, they argue that since Agniveers undergo army training and serve on battlefields, they should be covered under the Army Act. The speaker highlighted that unlike regular soldiers, Agniveer families do not receive the same resettlement schemes, pensions, or insurance benefits. Furthermore, the speaker noted that while the army commanders acknowledge these individuals as martyrs in correspondence, the civilian government is yet to provide formal recognition and benefits. The Union government is expected to state its position during the final hearing scheduled for 23 April.
