The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is facing a severe existential crisis as its political footprint shrinks drastically. Once a formidable force and the principal opposition, the Left suffered a monumental collapse in West Bengal following controversial land acquisition drives for industrialisation in Singur and Nandigram. This paved the way for the Trinamool Congress to seize power and allowed the BJP to emerge as the primary opposition in the state. The decline was exacerbated by organisational failures and a disconnect from the working class. Currently, the Left’s last remaining bastion is Kerala, where it has historically alternated power. While the Kerala government focuses on public health, housing, and social reforms, the 2025 local body elections indicate a challenging landscape, with the Congress-led alliance gaining ground and the BJP making inroads. The overarching question remains whether the communist ideology can adapt to India’s shifting political realities or if it will slowly fade into historical irrelevance.
