Reports have emerged of black rain or acid rain falling over parts of Iran following Israeli airstrikes on oil depots in recent days. Iranian residents have reported headaches, difficulty in breathing, and oil contamination. The World Health Organization has warned of severe health risks posed by acid rain following damage to oil facilities, advising people to stay indoors. WHO officials stated respiratory issues are a major concern and confirmed they are coordinating with Iranian authorities and hospitals. Massive fires at oil facilities have been burning for days, releasing hydrocarbons, sulphur compounds and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. When these gases mix with moisture in clouds, they form sulphuric and nitric acids that fall back to ground during rainfall. Acid rain can cause skin and eye irritation, breathing difficulties, lung damage, contamination of soil and water, with long-term health risks including cancer. Children, elderly and people with respiratory disease face the greatest risk, with Tehran’s nearly 10 million residents potentially affected.
