Accelerating the Electric Mobility Transition is Essential for Viksit Bharat! | India Today Conclave

India’s electric vehicle market is experiencing significant growth, with annual sales surging from 50,000 in 2016 to over two million. Government initiatives are a key driver, including waived registration fees and incentive schemes like FAME and PME Drive to make EVs more affordable. To address battery costs, which comprise up to 40% of a vehicle’s price, regulations now permit selling EVs without batteries. Infrastructure is also expanding, with Delhi planning to increase its charging points from approximately 9,000 to over 30,000 and expand its electric bus fleet. Automaker VinFast has committed to the market by ceasing production of internal combustion engines and investing in a 400-acre manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. Despite progress, challenges remain, including supply chain issues, the need for innovative financing, and improving charging point accessibility to achieve the goal of 30% EV penetration by 2030.
